Twenty-three Nigerian soldiers are missing after Boko Haram jihadists ambushed a convoy in the remote northeast of the country, said military and civilian vigilante sources on Saturday.

“Up until now 23 troops have not been accounted for. They include five officers and 18 soldiers,” a military officer in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, told AFP on condition of anonymity.
“They came under attack from Boko Haram terrorists in Balagallaye village in the Boboshe area outside Bama,” the officer said.
The officer said that on Friday afternoon the soldiers had received a report that “around 100 terrorists” had gathered in Boboshe and that the “troops mobilised to fight them”.
“Only three vehicles have made it back to Bama, the remaining eight and scores of soldiers are still missing. Their fate is still unclear,” he said.
“We lost eight vehicles. That’s a lot,” the officer added.
A member of the civilian militia confirmed the officer’s account, saying that “dozens” of soldiers are still missing.
“It is not known if they escaped into the bush, were killed or captured,” he said.
“You know it is now rainy season and the roads are water-logged. The convoy got stuck in the mud and Boko Haram opened fire. It was a perfect ambush and the soldiers were on the defensive,” he said.
“So far three vehicles have returned. The other eight have either been destroyed or captured by Boko Haram.”
The group’s Islamist insurgency has devastated the region since 2009, leaving at least 20,000 dead, displacing more than two million others and triggering a humanitarian crisis.
Despite persistent attacks, President Muhammadu Buhari maintains that Nigeria is in a “post-conflict stabilisation phase”.
The former military ruler came to power three years ago on a promise to defeat Boko Haram, which is aligned to the Islamic State group and threatens security in the Lake Chad region.
But while there have been clear military gains since a counter-insurgency was launched in 2015, suicide bombings and raids remain a constant threat, particularly to civilians.(AFP)

A former Governor of old Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has revealed what will happen when Igbo and Yoruba come together to pursue one purpose in the country.       
Ezeife stated that the Igbo and the Yoruba were jointly responsible for all the negative developments in Nigeria.
Speaking with The Punch, the former presidential adviser said as long as the tribes go lone-ranging in the Nigerian system, neither party will get what it wants.
He said, “The moment the Yoruba and the Igbo play joint venture in Nigerian politics, the Hausa, the Fulani and all the groups in Nigeria, large and small, will begin to celebrate the greatness of Nigeria.
“Yes, you talk about genesis; I will give factual history without blaming anybody. In 1952, with (Dr. Nnamdi) Azikiwe taking over from Herbert Macaulay against the Yoruba to run the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, the NCNC won the election into the Western House of Assembly and Zik (Azikiwe) went there to go and become premier.
“Because they had a comfortable majority, on the day the assembly was inaugurated and things were supposed to be done, Awo (Chief Obafemi Awolowo) and the Yoruba had lobbied the majority of the people, who were elected under the NCNC, to change camps, ‘cross carpet’ to the Action Group.”

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Monday formed an alliance with over 30 political parties and announced a new name called Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

According to ChannelsTv, the announcement followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the leaders of the merging parties.

This according to reports was to win the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the forthcoming 2019 election.

At Musa Yar’Adua’s Centre in Abuja, those in attendance include, of Former President Olusegun Obasanjo-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party of Nigeria (SDP), National Conscience Party (NCP), Labour Party, and a host of other newly registered parties.

PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Former Senate President David Mark, R-APC Chairman Buba Galadima, and Senator Dino Melaye.

The ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) is facing serious problems as the 2019 Elections gradually approach. The party seems to have lost its majority status in the two chambers of the national assembly following the formation of a faction of the party, R-APC.

In the upper chamber of the National Assembly, the APC won a total of 64 Senate seats; the PDP, 45; and the Labour Party, one. Similarly, the APC won 214 seats as against the PDP which got 125 seats -a difference of 89 seats in favour of the ruling party.

According to New Telegraph, these statistics had given the APC a clear political advantage in the parliament until the party split into factions, following the emergence of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC), a coalition of the aggrieved members of the party.

However, with the latest developments, while the PDP maintained its moderate presence in the Red Chamber with 43 seats, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has two seats while the APC has been split down in the middle.

The tsunami, it was learnt, has forced at least 30 senators elected on the platform of the APC into the newly formed R-APC, a special purpose vehicle on a political journey to the PDP.

A similar scenario played out in the House of Representatives where the bulk of those who represent the APC in the 360 – member Green Chamber were members of the New PDP (nPDP) and now subscribe to the R-APC train.

“As it stands now, the APC, as a party has lost its majority to the PDP because majority of them occupying APC seats are now members of the R-APC.

These include members of the nPDP who had been at loggerheads with the mainstream APC and others who were originally APC but have been forced by circumstances to join forces with the nPDP in the exodus out of the ruling party,” our source said.

Although, the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, had dismissed the emergence of the splinter group as a non-issue, there are strong indications that the rebel group has already activated a programme that could deal a heavy blow on the ruling party at the next polls.

A member of the R-APC and serving member of the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Sen. Shehu Sani, said the desperate moves by Oshiomhole to halt the drift in the APC came rather too late.

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has released the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates.
The Head of National Office of WAEC, Mr Olu Adenipekun announced this at a news briefing in Lagos.
Commenting on candidates’ performance in this year’s examination, Mr Adenipekun said out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination,  Seven Hundred and Eighty-six Thousand and sixteen candidates representing forty-nine point nine eight per cent obtained credits and above in five subjects including English language and Mathematics.
He explained that while ninety- three point five one per cent of the total candidates that sat the examination had their results fully released, six point four nine per cent of them still have a few of their subjects still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.
The Head of National Office of WAEC in Nigeria however, stressed that candidates with special needs were adequately provided for in the administration of the examination and their results had also been released.
Mr Adenipekun called on candidates that had fully fulfilled their financial obligations to the council to check their results online.
A total of One million, five hundred and seventy-two thousand, three hundred and ninety-six candidates sat the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates.

There was initial subtle consensus in many quarters that the end of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was near, with some projecting that it would happen during the ruling party’s national convention. That didn’t happen, and instead, all eyes are now on which PDP hopeful will challenge President Buhari come 2019.
The following is a list of men from which the PDP’s top contender will be picked:

(1)-Atiku Abubakar
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has thrown himself into the ring, jostling to secure the ticket of the leading opposition party. He has consistently bashed the current government for not living up to its mandate in the areas of security and economy, among others.
Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo
Dankwambo is a second-term governor of Gombe State who is said to have performed very well there. The governor has age by his side, and enjoys the support of many, including his colleagues in the PDP Governors’ Forum and NWC who see him as a key figure.
Dankwambo’s entry into the race has given hope to some members of the party and non-members in the North-East who feel the region should also take a shot at the presidency, and not the North-West. He was Accountant-General of the Federation, and is said to have the financial strength to run.
(2)-Donald Duke
Duke is a former governor of Cross River State and one of the notable politicians in the former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), who has declared to run for presidency.
Though he was elected on the platform of the PDP as governor, Duke had recently pitched tent with the CNM, but later in April, defended himself that he is still a member of the PDP.  Many believe that he too is only angling for the VP slot.
(3)-Ahmed Makarfi
Makarfi served for eight years as governor of Kaduna State and did another eight at the Senate thereafter. He later became Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee during the intense leadership crisis that ravaged the party for 14 months.
Makarfi had after his exit from office in the second week of December, 2017, maintained sealed lips concerning his ambition until a few weeks ago when he declared to run for the party’s ticket.
Insiders believe that the ex-governor has good chances of emerging as the party’s candidate, considering his track record as governor and at the Senate, including his towering credentials in the management of the PDP crisis which subsequently saw Senator Ali Modu Sheriff thrown out by the Supreme Court.
(4)-Datti Baba-Ahmed
‘Fix Nigeria’ is the slogan of Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, whose advertorials are now trending in the pages of newspapers, flyers, posters, banners, and billboards of epic proportions in many states across Nigeria. Unlike most of the other candidates who said they were persuaded to vie for the presidency, the hopeful, who is under-50 said he is convinced that this is his time and he has the requisite education, skills and agility to re-jig Nigeria for the better.
(5)-Kabiru Tanimu Turaki
Turaki is a former Minister of Special Duties, and was also chairman of Former Ministers’ Forum during the leadership crisis that tore the party into two parallel pieces. He played key roles towards the revival of the party and always led other ex-ministers on the platform of the party to give direction to the party. He stood by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led PDP until Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who refused to leave office was later sacked by the Supreme Court.
(6)-Malam Ibrahim Shekarau
Shekarau is a former governor of Kano State, who also worked relentlessly during the 14-month legal battle within the party under the aegis of PDP Ex-Ministers’ Forum. Like Lamido and Atiku, Shekarau has officially written to the PDP on his intention to vie for the presidency. He is seen as one of those serious about PDP reclaiming power in 2019.
Shekarau is also seen by many as a force. “As far as I am concerned, the issue of contest on the platform of the PDP is a level playing ground for everybody. Each and every member is free to test his popularity and political weight when the time comes,” he had said.
(7)-Sule Lamido
Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State and one of the founding fathers of the PDP, has also indicated interest in the party’s ticket for 2019. Analysts say the onetime Minister of Foreign Affairs has the clout to win the party’s ticket considering his track records of sacrifices made to the party since its formation in 1998. Despite his travails, he has not left the PDP.
It is instructive to note that while the party was experiencing setbacks in other climes after its defeat in 2015, it was thriving in Lamido’s home state of Jigawa to the extent that some members of the ruling APC reportedly defected to the PDP.
(8)-Ayodele Fayose
Fayose is governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum. He declared to run for the party’s ticket in September last year but maintained a low profile few weeks after. His declaration was against the zoning formula in the PDP considering that the ticket had been zoned to the north, while he is from the south.
Insiders, however, disclosed that the governor who would be leaving office in the last quarter of this year, is eyeing the vice presidential ticket and not the apex one. His challenge however, is that there are many contenders.
Smartzonas Saturday gathered that the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi, former Minister of Finance Okonjo-Iweala, and former Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee Sen. Ben Obi, are likely to contest the VP slot.

Mark is a four-time serving senator and ex-Senate president. He is former military governor of Niger State and experienced Benue-born politician. During his reign as Senate President, Mark brought stability to the Senate by bringing diplomacy to bear on issues before the floor.

Palmistry is the art of interpreting natural lines across the palms to derive some prediction for the future. By some estimates, the practice of palmistry may be thousands of years old. The practice is rooted in the belief, which has been partially confirmed by childhood development researchers, that because the palm lines develop during gestation they may offer some clues about a person's appearance, health, and proclivities later in life.^[1] Most palmist scholars agree that there is no way to determine a person's age by reading the palms.^[2] However, there are many lines across the palms, and it is believed that the lengths and intersections of these various lines can be used to "read" the general blueprint of a person's life.^[3]Learning how to identify the primary lines used in palmistry can help you read hands, and may help you calculate a person's age or vitality in life.

Part One of Two:
Identifying the Palm LinesEdit

1. 

   Choose the correct hand. Often times, a palm reader will rely on both hands to give a more accurate reading. However, some palmists prefer to use one primary hand, and which hand is chosen will depend on both the age and gender of the person being read. ^[4]

   • Men who are under the age of 30 should offer the left palm as the primary hand.^[5]
   • Men over 30 years of age should use the right palm as the primary hand.^[6]
   • Women who are under the age of 30 should offer the right palm as the primary hand.^[7]
   • Women over 30 years of age should use the left palm as the primary hand.^[8]

   Study the most common lines. Much like fingerprints, everyone's palm will be slightly different. However, there are certain basic contours that are consistent across almost every palm. Before you can read a palm, it's imperative that you be able to recognize the various palm lines on the primary hand. Knowing where the life line is in relation to the other nearest lines may make it easier to find. ^[9]

   • The heart line is the easiest to identify. It is located at the top of the palm, and it typically extends almost all the way across the palm, parallel to where the fingers meet the rest of the hand.^[10]
   • The head line is located below the heart line, more or less parallel to it. It runs horizontally from between the thumb and index finger straight across the palm.^[11]
   • The life line is the next prominent line on the hand. It is typically curved but may run vertically or at an angle, and may intersect the head line and/or the heart line. To find it, look for the semi-curved line that starts between the thumb and index finger and runs down toward the wrist.^[12]

   Understand the life line. The life line primarily indicates health, significant life changes, and the general well-being of a person.^[13] Contrary to popular belief, there is no real consensus on the correlation between the life line and a person's longevity.^[14] However, there is some consensus within palmistry studies that a person's vitality and quality of life can be determined by the life line.^[15]

Part Two of Two:
Reading the Life LineEdit

1. 

   Calculate a person's age. There is some disagreement among palmistry scholars on whether or not the life line indicates a person's longevity. Many scholars in the field do not believe that the age or longevity can be read from the palm. ^[16]However, those who do believe such a reading is possible look to the ratio of the life line to the heart line in order to conduct this reading. ^[17] If the life line (LL) to heart line (HL) ratio is:

   • 0.36 - this LL/HL ratio indicates a lifespan of 64 years years^[18]
   • 0.37 - this LL/HL ratio suggests a lifespan of 68 years^[19]
   • 0.35 - this LL/HL ratio means a lifespan of 71 years^[20]
   • 0.39 - this ratio suggests a lifespan of 74 years^[21]
   • 0.34 - this ratio indicates a lifespan of 76 years^[22]
   • 0.38 - this ratio also means a lifespan of 76 years^[23]
   • 0.37 - this ratio indicates a lifespan of 79 years^[24]
   • 0.41 - this ratio suggests a lifespan of 80 years^[25]
   • 0.36 - this ratio indicates a lifespan of 81 years^[26]

2. 

   Read the depth of the life line. A deep, unbroken life line indicates a strong vitality and a passion for life. By contrast, a shallow line indicates that the person may be easily misled or manipulated.^[27]

   Interpret the curve of the life line. The life line's curve is typically thought to be an indication of adventurousness. A line that curves close to the thumb is thought to indicate that the person does not stray far from home.
